How to look after your Elephant Ear
Moderate Indirect Sun - a shady corner in a bright room would be best.
Keep the soil moist allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between watering.
Elephant Ears will die or go dormant if exposed to cold temperatures. Keep in a warm humid room.
Feed once every 2 weeks starting in Spring ending late August. Use a diluted common houseplant fertiliser.
History of Elephant Ears
Alocasia Polly is a hybrid but to this day its parent plants are unknown. The name 'Amazonica' implies a Brazilian origin however, no Alocasia's are native to South America. It is widely believed that the name comes from Amazon Nursery in Florida, USA. It is believed Salvador Mauro created the hybrid in the 1950s but he never published or registered it.
Shape Symbolism
Alocasia's are sometimes referred to as 'the tree that grows up to the heavens' due to its dramatic large foliage and is rumoured to be the plant in all versions of the fairytale, Jack and the Beanstalk. This correlation to Jack and the Beanstalk has earned its place as a symbol of opportunity and taking risks.
