Additional Information

How to look after your Calathea Medallion

Moderate - bright indirect light. As with most Calatheas too much sunlight will cause it to lose its intricate patterns.

Keep soil moist but not soggy at all times. Do not allow to dry out between watering. Give it a small water frequently.

This is a tropical plant used to the floor of the Brazilian rain forest so thrives with lots of humidity. Bunch together with other plants or use a diffuser to create the perfect environment.

Feed once a month during the summer with a general house plant fertiliser.

History of Calathea Medallion

Known as the 'rose painted' Calathea, Calathea's are native to Northwest Brazil and grow on the shaded floor of tropical canopies. Native tribes use Calatheas to hold small items in or to wrap fish for transporting.

Why is it called a Prayer Plant?

Prayer Plants get their name from their ability to fold their leaves up at night like praying hands.

Why do they do this?
They open their leaves during the day to absorb as much sunlight as possible, allowing photosynthesis to take place. In the evening, when there is no more light source, why they fold them back however, is still in debate. Some believe it to prevent bacteria and fungus from forming on their leaves, whilst other believe its solely due to their circadian rhythm. Receptors in the plants leaves respond to light in what is called nyctinastic movement ( like muscle that flexes and relaxes when exposed to a light source).
