We love plants, plants are great. Yes, they’re perfect for filling up an empty spot on a windowsill and yes, they look amazing scattered upon a mantelpiece but did you know there are several other benefits to adding some green to your home? Don’t believe us?
- They can help you breathe! No but really The Earth is changing, pollution levels are sky rocketing and more and more people are developing respiratory problems and allergies due to this increase in smog and carbon monoxide and you’d be surprised to hear that this happens inside our own homes too. Well, some plants have air purifying qualities and are great at removing toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, toluene and xylene. Add a couple of plants to your space, a snake plant here and a Pothos there and you’ll be breathing easy in no time!
- Plants can help you flourish mentally... seriously. Studies have shown that just being in the presence of plants can reduce anxiety and stress and improve our mood, concentration and creativity. Research has shown us that gardening and horticulture are beneficial for mental health and is even thought to lower the risk of dementia! The effects of being around plants evoke feelings of freedom and tranquility, allowing your mind to decompress and mellow out! The bright coloured leaves and pretty flowers can literally give an instant mood boost aka positive vibes all round.
- They can help your physical body as well! Apothecaries and ancient healers have been using plants to aid the mind and body for thousands of years. Some of their ancient practices and rituals are the basis of what we use in modern medicine today. Some natural herbs and plants have managed to keep their healing properties without having to necessarily be added to chemicals and packed into tablet form. Lavender for example is a classic when it comes to herbal remedies. Its scent alone is known to reduce blood pressure and heart rate, relieve headaches, insomnia and asthma symptoms and can even be used to promote hair growth! I’ll take 100 to go please!
- And last but not least, they look good. That really is all there is to it, having some foliage in the corner of a boring room can bring a haphazard space together instantly. Plants are harmonious by nature and can offer exactly what you want when you want. I mean, what more is there to say?!
